Meet Monique, one of our trek leaders. Monique leads our Trek2Health modules with our clients, supporting them in their Trek2Health journey to better mental and physical health.
We had the chance to interview her and learn more about the great work she does with our clients.
How did you start with Trek2Health and what drew you to it?
I first learned about Trek2Health in early 2023 through a friend who was organizing half-day programs at work. The program seemed fantastic, offering a well-balanced mix of information and exercise to promote both physical and mental wellbeing. Recognizing the potential benefits for many in my unit, I decided to get involved and helped organize these programs for my team.
After coordinating several half-day sessions, I began volunteering to lead the modules at the end of 2024. I thoroughly enjoyed leading the modules, getting to know new people, watching them improve their fitness, achieve their goals and support them through any challenges. The Trek2Health volunteers are an inspiring group of individuals, who I aspire to be as remarkable as they are one day.
What’s your favourite part about being a part of Trek2Health?
Meeting new people, learning new information and exploring new places.
What other jobs have you worked in?
I have only worked with the Queensland Police Service since I was 21.
Do you have a favourite hike?
I can’t discriminate. I just love hiking, no matter where it is.
Do you have any unique talents or passions outside of hiking?
I have a passion for all things health and wellness, and I also love to surf.
Lovely to meet you Monique, and thank you for sharing your story.
Meet Jason, our training and logistics officer and a trek leader at Trek2Health.
Jason was nice enough to answer some questions about his experience with Trek2Health, read more below!
How did you start with Trek2Health and what drew you to it?
It all started with a recommendation from a colleague in work, who was a participant in the program. After hearing about it and looking at the Trek2Health website, I thought that this was something that I would really enjoy and benefit from, both physically and mentally.
What has been your experience with Trek2Health?
I have had a fantastic experience with Trek2Health. Although at times, it was physically challenging, it has really helped me both mentally and physically. The whole team of Trek Leaders were so welcoming and supportive due to their extensive experience.
What’s your favourite thing or memory about Trek2Health?
The final challenges at the end of each of the four modules were my favourite thing. These pushed you both mentally and physically, giving me a huge sense of achievement at the end.
What other types of industries have you worked in?
I joined the British Army at 18 years of age and ended up serving for over 24 years, having the opportunity to live and work in many fantastic and challenging places around the world. Since arriving in Australia in 2013, I have worked in Health in various capacities for a number of years. I am currently working as a civilian Frontline Skills Instructor for the Queensland Police Service and have done so for over six years now.
I am also honoured to have been invited into Trek2Health as a Trek Leader after completing the program. I have additionally been appointed as the new Training and Logistics Manager for the organisation. I absolutely love being involved in this way and feel so grateful to be able to give back and help others go through this program.
Do you have a favourite hike?
I have had the opportunity to trek in some beautiful places around the world, but there’s two in particular that stand out. The first was the Inca Trail in Peru and the second was the trek to Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas. Both had their challenges, but the scenery was so amazing during both treks. Here in Queensland, my favourite trek has to be the final challenge of module 4, which is on K’Gari. This is roughly an 80km trek over 4 days, self-sustained with some amazing places to stop on the way, like having a welcomed swim at Lake McKenzie.
At Trek2Health, we empower individuals to transform their mindset – seeing them as unique people on a journey of change. Through evidence-informed, nature-based interventions that change environments, we enable both the body and mind to embrace new beginnings, fostering resilience, functional fitness, and sustainable wellbeing.
