Running Hope

Veteran Dr Andy Grieve Takes on Kosci50 for Frontline Mental Health

When dawn breaks over the alpine peaks of Kosciuszko, few will see what lies beneath the surface of each runner’s stride. For Dr Andrew “Andy” Grieve, the upcoming Kosci50 Ultra is more than a race—it is a mission to carry hope to those who have carried burdens for others.

A path forged in service and struggle

Andy’s journey began in uniform. For 24 years, he served across three continents, in some of the most hostile, austere, and unpredictable environments our world can offer. He worked in remote medical settings, with special‐forces units, in conflict zones, and in disaster settings. He learned to read maps by starlight, treat injuries with scarce resources, lead teams under fire, and endure when every muscle and nerve was screaming to quit.

Yet the real fight, for Andy, began after he laid down the uniform.

When the adrenaline subsided and the roar of duty faded, Andy faced something equally formidable: the silent, creeping weight of mental unrest. Nights when the memories refused to rest. Moments of self-doubt, guilt, isolation, and the fear of vulnerability. He came to know intimately how even the strongest among us can carry wounds unseen.

He refused to stay silent.

Choosing Trek2Health:

“This is the place we need”

Andy discovered Trek2Health at a crossroads. He had seen many well-meaning interventions. But he sought something more than normal talk fest. He wanted an approach that honoured the body, the mind, and the spirit—and that met frontline workers where they are.

When he spoke with the team at Trek2Health, it became clear: their philosophy—Resilience via Earth, nature-based, evidence-informed care, community, shared journey—aligned with his values. The idea of healing through green exercise, connection, and purpose resonated with his own path. He accepted the role of Ambassador, not because he needed the platform, but because their mission was one he believed must be raised up.

Andy sees in Trek2Health not just a charity—but a lifeline. A way for those who face trauma, stress, burnout, moral injury, or loss to find a place that asks: “How can we walk with you?” rather than “What’s your diagnosis?”

Kosci50: 50 km of challenge, for many thousands in need

The Kosci50 Ultra, part of Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko by UTMB, is a formidable event: 50 km over alpine trails, through snow gum forests, mountain streams, climbs and descents—1300 m of elevation gain over terrain that tests endurance and spirit alike. It’s a distance that grants “ultra runner” status without the extremes of 100 km. It pushes runners to see what they are made of, both in body and mind.

Andy’s plan is clear: he will run every one of those 50 kilometres not just for personal bests or finish medals, but for every teacher, paramedic, nurse, officer, volunteer, veteran, clinician—anyone in the frontline trenches of mental health stress. Each step he takes is a prayer, a protest, a promise: that no one should feel they must face darkness alone.

But he can’t run this alone.

Why Your Support Matters

Trek2Health’s programs are not generic. They are tailored for those who serve—and often sacrifice. Their mechanisms are thoughtful:

  • Nature-based treks and resilience training, combining physical challenge and psychological repair.

  • Pre- and post-program evaluations, making sure each participant’s progress is real and measurable.

  • Support not just during crisis but before it escalates, breaking down stigma and promoting help-seeking early.

Your donation is not symbolic. Every AU$1,000 raised supports one frontline worker through the full 6-week resilience program. Every dollar moves someone from isolation into connection, from burnout into renewal.

When Andy crosses that finish line at Kosci50, it will not be an end—you and your generosity will be there with him. Every kilometre he runs is fuelled by the belief that those who give so much deserve to be cared for.

A call to run with us (in spirit or support)

We ask you: will you join this journey with Andy? Donate what you can. Share this story. Encourage others to give and support Trek2Health’s complimentary life-changing 12-month programs.

Because for our frontline families, there is no finish line in this fight. But together—with Andy as our champion Ambassador, Trek2Health as our vessel, and your heart as our strength—we can help heal the hidden wounds.

Let’s turn footsteps into hope.
